You may have questions about the Pfizer Epilepsy Scholarship.
So did those who applied in past years. Here is a list of some of the
most commonly asked questions and answers.
Who can apply?
In order to be considered you must have:
• Overcome the challenges of epilepsy
• Been successful in school
• Done well in activities outside the classroom or
in the community
• Shown a desire to make the most out of college
or graduate school
How many winners are selected?
40 winners are selected.
How much money is given to the winners?
Each winner receives a 1-year, $2000 scholarship.
Who picks the winners?
Winners are picked by a panel of judges made up of experts in education and medicine.
How do I apply?
First, register on this site. Next, you can get an application in any of 3 ways:
• Download the form
• Sign up on this Web site to get one in the mail
• Ask your doctor or guidance counselor for one
Is there an age limit?
No. See the "
Eligibility" Web page.
I am not in college or graduate school right now. I plan on returning to school
next year. Can I still apply?
Yes. You can apply if you will be enrolled in school in the fall of 2010.
Who should write the letters of recommendation?
One letter must come from your doctor. The other letter can come from a:
• Friend
• Family member
• Teacher
• Coach
• Employer
What should the doctor letter of recommendation include?
The letter from your doctor should state that you are now under his/her care for
epilepsy. The letter should also describe:
• The challenges you have overcome
• How long you have had epilepsy
• Reasons why you deserve this scholarship
What should the other letter include?
The other letter of recommendation should describe:
• Your extracurricular and community activities
• Any academic achievements
• Reasons why you deserve this scholarship
What should I include in my essay?
You can choose from 4 essay topics:
• How you have overcome the challenges of epilepsy
(personally, socially, academically)
• What living with epilepsy means to you
• Who has helped you succeed, and how
• An achievement you are proud of
Pick just 1 of these topics to write about.
Can my essay be more than 250 words?
Yes. But it should be as close to 250 words as possible.
When is the deadline for applying?
Deadline for 2010 submissions is June 15, 2010 postmarked.
Do I need to send in my official transcripts to show proof of my grades?
No. An official or unofficial copy is fine.
Do I have to send in all of the application materials at once?
No. You can send them in separate mailings.
When can I apply for the 2010 scholarship?
Applications will be available starting in late February 2010.
I have applied in past years. Can I apply again?
Yes. You can apply every year. Do not apply again if you have already won the scholarship.
I have won before. Can I apply again?
No. Once you have won, you can no longer apply.
When are the winners announced?
Winners will be announced no later than the end of July 2010.
